2006 - University of Alberta water specialist, Terry Lachance, visited Nyarut, Africa, to assess the water situation for a potential Bio-sand filter use.
2007 – A rainwater harvesting system was set up and tanks installed to store upto 21,000L of rainwater for use as community drinking water.
2009 – A bio-sand filter workshop was given to leaders from 5 Kenyan villages. 3 filters were built and two were purchased for installation at Nyarut Primary School.
The Bio-sand Filter removes harmful 95-99% of harmful bacteria and parasites from the drinking water. With proper minimal maintenance, they have an indefinite life span and ideally each household would own and service their own unit. Future setup of a bio-sand filter facility would enable production for local use and also for business opportunities to manufacture the filters for surrounding villages inKenya. The cost of the final product is about $30-$40 per filter for a life-long supply of clean drinking water. |
