VIABILITY & SUSTAINABILITY- Nyarut Village, Kenya Africa

The self-motivated organization of the Nyarut Women's Group (2002) and the enthusiasm with which the village people seek assistance, will ensure their active participation in the project and its ultimate success. The communities have banded together to volunteer and form an Executive Committee, with Board of Directors and sub-committees, to be actively involved in the decision-making processes. They have enthusiastically offered to help build their new community and to date have provided 100% of the labour to build the school, the water system, the hall, and the clinic. Five leaders from five different villages took part in the Biosand filter training workshop. Medical staffing is available, and teachers are government-paid. Kenyan government officials have been solicited to further assist in the providing of local resources and government funding.

This long-term Kenya project must be divided into several phases to be manageable and realistic. The current projection in Nyarut has been functioning since 2006 and the charity's goal was to complete the proposed multi-phase work over a 2-3 year period. We are on schedule. Using Nyarut as a model village, it was anticipated that there would be extensions of the project radiating out to nearby villages in the future. As of 2009, this is already happening as the 6 villages immediately surrounding Nyarut Village are now actively involved. Okiro, the Building Contractor for the construction in Nyarut has been so inspired that he has been motivating, helping, and encouraging his villagers in Nyangina to strive to better their own way of living through improved agricultural methods and development of fish farming. They are eagerly anticipating the arrival of Engineering Ministries International in February of 2010 to work with them to design an irrigation system and develop an efficient and effective sanitation layout. Regular visits by the Coordinator and other foreign aid workers during the multi-phase development will ensure the monitoring of progress and the meeting of challenges as they arise.

A Micro-credit loan system for small business is planned to provide income in the community and sustainability. Currently proposed business ventures include: increased food production to market; a sewing/tailoring shop; gravel-making (ballast) for concrete. Proposals for the future may include computer training, a cyber café, and crafts center. A small tailoring business has begun.
